ACNA - How should we spend a $21,000 neighbourhood grant?

We need your input! Ward 6 in the City of Kitchener won a Festival of Neighbourhoods grant valued at $21,000 for a community improvement project! The project has to take the form of something constructed/manufactured which will last for many years.

Please take a few moments to complete a three question survey and add your voice to the planning process. This survey will be open until June 10th.  Paper copies are available at the Country Hills Community Centre.

It has been some time since the City received an Official Plan Amendment and Zone Change application from Bloomingdale Mews Ltd. for 593 Strasburg Road.

Summary of May 2nd, 2017 ACNA Meeting

Community Cleanup Day was held Saturday April 22nd.  10 people showed up to pick up litter and 14 bags of garbage were collected.

Family Fun Day was held at the Country Hills Community Center on Sunday April 30th.  Attendance was down from last year, possibly due to poor weather, even though the event was almost entirely indoors.  78 lbs of food and $10 was collected for the Food Bank.

Neighbours Day will be June 10th.  Country Hills Community Center events will include a smaller celebration than in the past, as the City wishes to focus more on community-led events in the neighbourhoods.  The CHCC event will feature a hot dog BBQ, activities with youth and yoga/tai chi in the park.

The annual Alpine Garage Sales will be promoted for June 10th, with a Kijiji ad and an online map.  It will also be promoted through social media.

Cinema Under the Stars - the organizing committee will get together later in May to continue planning the event.  A date and movie are both yet to be chosen.  The event is more likely to be in August or September.  We are working on getting sponsor donations for the event.

ACNA 10th anniversary event.  Two ACNA members will meet with the local City of Kitchener facilitator to discuss how to organize an event for some time this summer.  Possibly a BBQ picnic in Alpine Park.

The process of deciding how to spend the Festival of Neighbourhoods 2015 prize grant to Ward 6 is proceeding.  We are collecting input from Ward 6 residents on how people would like to see the money spent.  We have created a survey which was used at Family Fun Day and which will be available online in the near future.  Results from the survey will be used to narrow the options for the grant.

There have been a number of thefts in the neighborhood, mainly in parked cars and back yards.  This has been happening across the city this spring.

Roundabout construction work on Ottawa Street has started.  The temporary bypass road is being built now.  The diversion of Ottawa Street is planned to start on May 22nd, limiting access from Alpine and Homer Watson.  Concerns were expressed about increased traffic on Strasburg Road during construction, impacting the ability of pedestrians to cross Strasburg at the power line trail.  City Councillor Paul Singh is still considering organizing a public information meeting on the project.

Proposed A&W construction at Ottawa and Strasburg.  City Councillor Paul Singh says that the developer's challenge to the Ontario Municipal Board of City Council's decision to refuse the application has not yet been filed, although it is expected.

Paul Singh is interested in promoting the creation of a community garden in Ward 6, and proposes Alpine Park as a possible location.  This would be in the grassed part by Kingswood Drive.  A group of residents would have to be assembled to drive the project, with Paul's help.

Paul Singh plans to go door-to-door during the Spring in parts of Ward 6, to talk to residents about neighbourhood issues.  He offered to ACNA to give him a question that we would like answered of residents in the ACNA area.  He would ask and report back on what people say.  Nobody at the meeting could think of one on the spot, so the option is still there.

The remediation of McLennan Park will be done this year.  Where the wood chips are, a layer of clay is to be put down to prevent methane from surfacing, and the soil put back on top, so grass can grow there.

A two-page ACNA newsletter flyer was delivered to all households in the ACNA area.

Two representatives from the Alpine School Parents Council attended the ACNA meeting.  They outlined the purpose of the council, which focuses on fund raising for schoolyard amenities, like play structures and trees.  One of the play structures was removed due to safety issues and the other will removed in the next few years as it reaches the end of its expected lifespan.

They are currently helping to organize the Alpine School Fun Fair. which is open to the community.  It will be held Tuesday, June 13th at 5 pm (rain date Thursday 15th) and will feature games, a BBQ, raffle, and a silent auction.  The police, fire services and an ambulance are all scheduled to be there.  There will be entertainment.  They are looking for a cash donation to help finance the BBQ, and for student volunteers.  Also sponsor donations for the silent auction.

The current computer system used by the City to register participants for Community Center programs will be replaced by a new system (ActiveNet) which will have much more capacity for simultaneous users and should crash less often.  To implement the changeover, there will be no system capable of doing bookings, payments or other transactions between May 24th and June 4th.  The new system goes live on June 5th.

The Young Art event will be on Thursday May 4th at the Waterloo Region Museum from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  This event will showcase local art by youth 13 to 24 years old.

The outreach worker (Sue) at Country Hills Community Center is looking for donations of personal hygiene items and snacks that do not need refrigeration to provide to people in need.  She will also have a limited amount of Food Bank food to distribute if needed.  She is there on Mondays and Thursdays.

Our next scheduled meeting date is 7:00 pm, Tuesday, June 6th at Alpine Public School.  This meeting may be cancelled if agenda items are not required.
